The most inspirational person in my life–that I never met
From the time I was a little girl to the present day, Mary Richards was a touchstone for me. I admired her success. I respected her healthy relationships with both male and female friends. I emulated her work ethic. I loved her joie de vivre. I seriously coveted her apartment.
Best of all, none of that was presented as radical. She was quietly subversive by being totally ordinary. People say “if you can’t see it, you can’t be it.” Mary Richards gave me, and many of my generation, the earliest–and thus most powerful–role model of our lives. And she helped create the future “Murrays” and “Mr. Grants” who welcomed us as their colleagues and friends.
Thank you Mary Tyler Moore.

Thanks for the layout of her apartment. It’s amazing that it seemed so perfect to all of us, yet it really only had the one (albeit, large) window.
