Keeping the “Keeps”
Grommet is growing rapidly, both revenue and people-wise. So I recently asked the team to tell me what they thought we had to protect–as we navigate from toddler to teenager as a company. I’ve been told this is the trickiest phase when it comes to culture, so I am taking it seriously.
The anonymous survey yielded a bunch of themes and individual gems I share below. But the bottom line summary was stated by my colleague Lauren Joseph: “Basically that at the core, people want to be treated as human. They want to solve problems, exercise free will, earn rewards based on merit, and form meaningful connections to other people based on a shared mission. And at the end of the day, we never really grow out of the comfort of a good snack. “
At the top of this post is a silly video we shot last week at our summer outing. It puts faces to the company and the 80 or so wonderful human beings whom I feel privileged to lead. (Warning: Joanne and I look like dancing fools in the video.)
For our survey, I used a piece of our “Stop, Start, Keep” framework that is part of our culture and previously explained here. Below are a few of the “Keeps” that represented broad themes in the survey responses:
While we are far from perfect, I am very proud of this reflection of the company, in the words of the team. It makes me want to work twice as hard.
