Like the ’60’s, only better
A few months ago, when Nadia Auch of the Center for Peace and Commerce at the University of San Diego asked me to fly out to be on a panel, I thought,
I have no idea who these people are. or what they do, but I am so THERE.
Turned out the event was co-sponsored by the USD Ahlers Center for International Business, and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice. Now that is a mighty big mouthful, but the focus of the event was “Innovative Products for Sustainable Societies.” That’s an idea we can all understand.
And believe me, if you spend any time at all hanging with students, you know this theme is foremost on their minds. They aren’t bothering with 60’s style inefficient demonstrations or sit-ins. They are acting with their dollars, their social media enabled voices, and their careers to shape the world they want to live in. I love it.
One of the speakers, the Stakeholder Mobilization Director (another long mouthful) Sarah Severn from Nike reinforced this GenY set of values:
Having social enterprise benefits and sustainable business attributes are not nice-to-haves. Any company that does not have them simply will not be able to compete.
I snapped some shots of the beautiful facility, and my rockin’ panel. What an honor.

A portrait in the hallway. I don't think she ate an excessive amount of Big Macs, judging by her trim figure.
And what a treat to finally meet Tori Tait of the Daily Grommet team, who lives in the San Diego area. I felt like I already knew her. But what a wacky world to have a key team member already hired and thriving–with NO ONE ever having met her in person! We truly are expert at using technologies, for managing and forwarding our business, and Tori leads the social media charge.
One Response to “Like the ’60’s, only better”
Jules,
It was wonderful to finally meet in person! I agree, the energy and passion of the students (and panelists) was great to experience. A true “meeting of the minds.”
